Aftercare

What is aquamation?

Bloom Veterinary partners with AquaCrossings, a professional and respectful team dedicated to compassionate body care.

Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) is a gentle, water-based alternative to flame cremation that mirrors the earth's natural process. Your pet's body is returned to its natural elements through a slow, peaceful cycle.

If you have any questions, we are here to walk you through this decision with care and compassion. Bloom Veterinary and our trusted partner ensure that every pet is treated with the utmost care and dignity.

What to expect during the visit

1

Initial Connection

Your veterinarian arrives and spends a few quiet minutes connecting with you and your pet. We will go over the process and answer any questions you may have.

2

Gentle Sedation

Your pet receives a sedative to help them relax and fall into a gentle sleep, ensuring they feel no fear or pain. This takes about 5–10 minutes.

3

Peaceful Passing

Once fully relaxed, a final injection is given to help your pet pass peacefully and painlessly.

4

Time for Goodbyes

We will give you as much time as you need for goodbyes and will assist with aftercare if you have chosen it.

What you may notice

After your pet has received the final injection and has peacefully passed, there may be some physical responses that occur. These physical changes are all part of the body's natural transition, and they do not mean your pet is in pain or still aware. We will be there to guide you through each step and ensure your pet's passing is peaceful and dignified.

A final breath or sigh
Some pets take a deep breath shortly after passing. This is a reflex, not a sign of distress.
Muscle twitches or movement
Minor movements or muscle contractions can occur as the body relaxes. These are involuntary and normal.
Eyes may remain open
Common after passing. You are welcome to gently close them if you wish.
Loss of bladder or bowel control
As muscles relax, this may occur. We will assist with gentle cleaning as needed.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions or share your concerns at any time during the visit.

How to prepare your home

1
Create a Comfortable Space
Choose a quiet, comfortable space like your pet's bed, your lap, or a favorite sunny spot.
2
Set a Peaceful Atmosphere
You may wish to dim lights, light a candle, or play soft music.
3
Prepare Bedding
Place a blanket or towel down, if desired. We will also bring a cozy blanket.
4
Supporting Grieving Pets
Other household pets are welcome to be present during the visit if you feel it will help them understand and process the loss. However, some animals do better when separated during emotional events, especially if they are prone to stress or anxiety. You know them best — we support whatever feels right for your family.

Signs of pet grief

Just like people, animals can grieve the loss of a companion. Some may show signs such as:

Changes in appetite or sleep
Increased vocalization
Searching behaviors
Clinginess or withdrawal

We recommend keeping routines consistent and offering extra affection.

Words from families we've walked alongside.

“I called half a dozen in home euthanization companies before I landed here. The others didn't feel right, and Rubicon deserved the best. I can't thank this company enough for the service they provided. My dog hated nothing more than going to the vet, and it hurt my heart thinking that the last place he would experience life would be at the place he hated most. Bloom came to us same day with very short notice and allowed our boy to pass peacefully in his bed at home. Thank you so much to everyone from the people on the phone, to the ladies who came on the day of.”

Erica R.

“Dr. Kaitlyn was very kind, calm and compassionate as we said good bye to our sweet 15 year old dog. She was patient, allowed us all the time we needed and answered all our questions. We were able to get a same day appointment on a Saturday. So grateful for them and their willingness to work outside of normal hours for these appointments that are difficult.”

Raegan T.

“Dr. Volpe and Tech Lopez helped our furry daughter pass and showed wonderful compassion, empathy and kindness. They allowed us our time to say good bye and made this experience the best it could possibly be. I would highly recommend them if you need any Vet services and will use them again when we get another dog. Thank You so much for all you did for us and our furry child. Much appreciated.”
